Stunned I hear a knock at the door. You know that feeling when you're not expecting anyone to come over--so in your mind ten people suddenly come to mind....mailman, UPS, neighbor, friend, grandma, wait.....maybe I wasn't hearing the door after all.
I hear a knock again. "Oh no" I think to myself.
I look around my place and I am moving all my living room furniture around for the new furniture to come tomorrow. I only have on boxer shorts.
Knock again.
I run to my room throw on a hoodie and sweat pants. I stumble over a couple boxes on my way back through to the door still not knowing who is on the other side. I open it. Two gentleman I have never seen before are standing before me. One older man who resembles my grandfather and a younger man with a smile from ear-to-ear.
"Hi, we're from Forrest Park Baptist Church, Did we catch you at a bad time?"
Yes I thought to myself, this is a terrible time. But you cant say that to the nice church folk that made there way over.
"Now, no, no, I look behind me, stammering, no, no, no, this is a good time." (one more no in there and they might have thought I was a stuttering guy)
"Come on in gentleman."
They walk in, look around. I'm thinking judge not thyself--you have re-arranged furniture before in your lifetime. Thou not judge or cast stones.
They have a seat. "We hear that you're the new anchorman," one of the guys says.
I look down at my hoodie, sweat pants and slippers. Over their shoulder the TV is on, the movie I was watching was "Desperation" by Stephen King. I reach for the remote control quickly, at the same time my cell phone starts going off, I have no time to think that I look like hell, the technology in my new place is already setting the mood.
I excuse myself to the kitchen, I trip on the same damn box I tripped on when I was going to answer the door. I reach over for my cell phone, send it to voice mail and slam it down on the table.
"So yea, I'm the new guy over at 12," I say shyly, caught off guard by their un announced visit.
"Wow, you hear that we are visiting a celebrity," the younger man said to the older one.
"Oh no, not quite and well as you can see this is about as casual looking as I get."
They stayed for a little while, long enough for me to explain that I'm not all moved in yet and that I was making way for the new furniture in the morning. I thought it was only fair that I explained to them why they were sitting on the sofa in the kitchen area.
"Well we thank you for coming to church this weekend. We hope you liked the service."
"Oh very much, very much, may I get you a water, or something, a slice of pumpkin pie," It slipped through my lips. The pie I ruined today was sitting on the counter. It slipped I didn't mean to say it. It was something my grandma would say and in this uncomfortable moment I was praying inside they said no.
"Not for me, I'm fine," the younger man said.
"Pumpkin pie eh?" the older man said.
I gave a lop sided smile with a childish nod.
"Oh I better not, but it sounds good young man," he said.
Whew!! That could have been a disaster.
A few minutes pass and they get up and say they better get going. I thanked them for coming over and they left.
I shut the door, looked down again at what I was wearing, walked back to the living room and looked at the mess I had going for myself and then stepped over the counter and took one look at the pie.
I just broke out laughing out loud and out loud said, "This shit only happens to me! Forgive my language Lord." and back to cleaning I went.
*Shakes his head. Why me! LoL
Hope you're having a blessed Tuesday night as well! ;0)
