Modern Times Call For Modern Measures

I Really Don't Seem To Care

I struggle with this subject because I don't want to be 'young' and pale but I don't want to be 'old' and aged pre-mature.

Since I've been 16-years-old I have worked out and tanned on a pretty regular basis. I go through spurts which are not only un-healthy but are a little compulsive and then I flip and go the extreme in the other direction.

I once told my grandma I don't care if I died today as long as I had a 6pac and was tan. Vain...I know. But isn't the business I'm in. I can't tell you how many stories of myself or those I work with I have from people saying don't like your hair, you look pale, you look better in person..blah blah blah.

So I continue to tan, go on crazy fad diets to drop a few lbs over night and well it finally caught up with me yesterday. Not only was I tanning but I was doing it with no goggles on.......why? So I don't get the lines over my nose or to my ears.....vain, I know.

Well it seems I burned my eye lid to the point it hurts to open it all the way, I can't get my contact in and its nearly swollen shut. But of course what is my attitude, well at least I'm tan. I thought about going today just to determine I better give it a little time.

Is it silly, my attitude and for all those that share the same attitude. To put aside health issues like pre-mature aging, skin cancer and dehydration from these fad diets? I already know the answer---but changing my mind is unlikely.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

In the News....

What's On Your Mind?

So It's almost Christmas! There is a lot going on and I just wanted an open forum.

What is on your mind? Have anything pressing on your mind? Happy, frustrated, thankful, have a complaint.

Lets hear em.....

Offended By X-mas Card

I'm not very close to my aunt and uncle that live in Florida. They lived there since before I was born so I didn't get a real chance to get to know them.

Well...I mailed them a Christmas card this year......nice gesture right? I in years past haven't sent them a card---I did last year but not before that.

I signed, love Brian...

My aunt called my grandma to complain that I hadn't been more personal. That she was disappointed that I didn't write more than just my name.

I wish I could just let it go but it's been bothering me since. It made me kind of wish I just hadn't sent a card to begin with.

I mailed Rae Chelle a card at WIBW and then felt that I should write everyone one because I didn't want to leave anyone out.

Do you get into the X-mas card writing or did you give it up a long time ago? So far I haven't gotten one this year...lol.....*sigh.

Hope everyone had a great Friday!

What I Have to Offer

Here We Go! Caption It!!

Brian's Caption: This is the bed I sleep in when I sleep alone. Haha!
You're turn!

This is How I Feel About Working Out Today!

Day Two on the Job

Two days almost down....
I have had a great start at KODE. Yesterday, my first day, I learned the basics of the station. Where to send a fax, where my mailbox will be, how to log into my e-mail, what the phone number to the station is, a reiteration of 911. You know, the basics. Haha.
I spent the majority of my first day with a great lady from United Way. Valerie and I went to 9 of the 19 non-for profit agencies in Joplin. I was so excited to get a chance to network and meet those in this community who have chose to dedicate their lives to helping others. Isn't that a great way to start?
Today I learned how to edit the ole fashioned way of tape-to-tape. Yikes. I thought it would be harder, but the concept like all old things is pretty basic. (right ps!)
I went over and met the PR person for St. John's Hospital and joined the Young Leaders Society for the Joplin Chamber of Commerce.
Tonight I am going to the school board meeting at 7 p.m. to introduce myself and show that education is something that means a great deal to me.
Wow, look at me being all professional. ;0)
So far I'm off to a great start and I'm happy to say no snow!! (so far!)

Simpson Locked Up For 15 Years

LAS VEGAS (AP) — O.J. Simpson has apologized to the judge at his sentencing hearing and says he didn't mean to steal from anybody when he tried to retrieve memorabilia.

Simpson made his statement before sentencing Friday in his armed robber case in a soft voice that was somewhat hoarse.

He appeared ready to break down in tears as he told Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass that he was "sorry and confused" before going into a rambling, 5-minute self-pity declaration.
"I didn't want to steal anything from anyone ... I'm sorry, sorry," he said.
Judge Glass ruled before sentencing that Simpson cannot be freed on bail pending possible appeal.
I'm dying to hear your thoughts on this! Please leave a comment. Sentencing too harsh? Should he already be in jail for murder? Are we too hard on the old man? You tell me!

Grandma, "It's Sprinkling Snow"

"So how is the weather," I asked during our daily phone call.

"It's okay, it's cold but not too cold, it's sprinkling snow right now," she said.

"It's sprinkling snow," I repeated back, clearly picking on her, "Well, is it snowing or raining?"

"Neither," she replied.

"Well it has to be doing one or the other."

"I said, it's sprinkling snow."

"Haha, I got that, so it's a mix of both then," I clarified.

"Yea, that's what I said," was her quick snap.

I can hear my grandpa in the background, "You don't know what it's doing outside you haven't left the house in three days."

"Hey, shut up. No one asked you," she snapped at him.

Haha, I love when they get in little tiffs.

"Ugh, apparently I don't know what it's doing outside," she said to make him happy.

I love these moments!!

That's The Spirit!

My cousin Jessica called me today awfully disappointed.

Her daughter 6-year-old Madison came home from school the other day and said she needed reindeer antlers to wear during music class.

Jessica went to K-Mart and bought the antlers. She came across a friend who was working their who offered her a discount, so she thought it would be nice to get antlers for all the kids in Madison's first grade class.

She bought 14 of them and Madison took the bag of Antlers to class and passed them out to everyone in the room. The teacher came over and asked he what she was doing. She said her mom bought antlers for everyone in music class.

The teacher just shook her head.

After class other mothers started to come up to the music teacher asking why everyone in only a certain class had antlers and why didn't the other kids in the other class get them. The teacher explained that one parent took it upon themselves without notifying her that she was going to get them for everyone in the class.

The teacher stormed off to find my cousin.

"Now listen here, you buy them for all the other classes as well or we wont be using them this year," the teacher told my cousin in the hallway.

My cousin shocked said, "Why should I have to buy them for all the other classes? My daughter is only in one class."

The teacher explained that she only wanted one set of antlers to begin with and that only one student can be Rudolph. She made it very clear that student wasn't going to be miss Madison!

Another parent came up to my cousin and said, "Listen we're all going to pitch in for the other classes, how much do you want to contribute?"

"How much do I want to contribute," she repeated, "I don't want to contribute anything. I already bought 14 of them for one class."

The parent disgusted stormed away.

Now where in the world is the Christmas spirit in all of this.........ridiculous. That's what you get for going out of your way to be nice to others.

Hey Operator

Come & Knock on My Door

Stunned I hear a knock at the door.

You know that feeling when you're not expecting anyone to come over--so in your mind ten people suddenly come to mind....mailman, UPS, neighbor, friend, grandma, wait.....maybe I wasn't hearing the door after all.

I hear a knock again. "Oh no" I think to myself.

I look around my place and I am moving all my living room furniture around for the new furniture to come tomorrow. I only have on boxer shorts.

Knock again.

I run to my room throw on a hoodie and sweat pants. I stumble over a couple boxes on my way back through to the door still not knowing who is on the other side. I open it. Two gentleman I have never seen before are standing before me. One older man who resembles my grandfather and a younger man with a smile from ear-to-ear.

"Hi, we're from Forrest Park Baptist Church, Did we catch you at a bad time?"

Yes I thought to myself, this is a terrible time. But you cant say that to the nice church folk that made there way over.

"Now, no, no, I look behind me, stammering, no, no, no, this is a good time." (one more no in there and they might have thought I was a stuttering guy)

"Come on in gentleman."

They walk in, look around. I'm thinking judge not thyself--you have re-arranged furniture before in your lifetime. Thou not judge or cast stones.

They have a seat. "We hear that you're the new anchorman," one of the guys says.

I look down at my hoodie, sweat pants and slippers. Over their shoulder the TV is on, the movie I was watching was "Desperation" by Stephen King. I reach for the remote control quickly, at the same time my cell phone starts going off, I have no time to think that I look like hell, the technology in my new place is already setting the mood.

I excuse myself to the kitchen, I trip on the same damn box I tripped on when I was going to answer the door. I reach over for my cell phone, send it to voice mail and slam it down on the table.

"So yea, I'm the new guy over at 12," I say shyly, caught off guard by their un announced visit.

"Wow, you hear that we are visiting a celebrity," the younger man said to the older one.

"Oh no, not quite and well as you can see this is about as casual looking as I get."

They stayed for a little while, long enough for me to explain that I'm not all moved in yet and that I was making way for the new furniture in the morning. I thought it was only fair that I explained to them why they were sitting on the sofa in the kitchen area.

"Well we thank you for coming to church this weekend. We hope you liked the service."

"Oh very much, very much, may I get you a water, or something, a slice of pumpkin pie," It slipped through my lips. The pie I ruined today was sitting on the counter. It slipped I didn't mean to say it. It was something my grandma would say and in this uncomfortable moment I was praying inside they said no.

"Not for me, I'm fine," the younger man said.

"Pumpkin pie eh?" the older man said.

I gave a lop sided smile with a childish nod.

"Oh I better not, but it sounds good young man," he said.

Whew!! That could have been a disaster.

A few minutes pass and they get up and say they better get going. I thanked them for coming over and they left.

I shut the door, looked down again at what I was wearing, walked back to the living room and looked at the mess I had going for myself and then stepped over the counter and took one look at the pie.

I just broke out laughing out loud and out loud said, "This shit only happens to me! Forgive my language Lord." and back to cleaning I went.

*Shakes his head. Why me! LoL

Hope you're having a blessed Tuesday night as well! ;0)

No Way!

So I made dinner tonight and thought now is the time for that Mrs. Smith's pumpkin pie. (actual pie shown above)

You know that feeling when you get so excited for something that you can just explode!?! Well that was my feeling over this pie......I would say it was a near craving.

So I eat my dinner, go to the freezer and take out the pie. I get out my plate and my fork and reach up for the cool whip. Yum......!

I get out the knife and take the pie out of the box. I'm all ready to cut into it. It's not cooked! What? I quickly turn over the box.....It says: Directions, place in the oven for 1 hour at 375 degrees, let cool for 2 hours before eating.

What!?!

I have to wait 3 hours to have my pie?........damn-the-luck!

I thought the pie was already made just take it out.......let it defrost a few minutes and dive in!

Sadly, I returned the plate to the cupboard, fork to the drawer, cool whip to the freezer and then took that damn pie and tossed it back in the box and threw it back in the freezer.

I had a cookie instead.

Rough night at the Dorman residence! haha!

Grandma, "You Don't Have Any Friends!"

So it is the first big snow fall in Michigan and with it is the first argument I have heard my grandparents get in over the snow!
I'm on the phone with my grandma tonight and she was telling me about the snow.
"I have no idea who plowed our drive-way. I woke up this morning with 8 inches of snow and the drive-way was plowed."
I hear my grandpa in the back-ground. "Forget it."
"Who asked you," she snapped.
I chuckle a little. "It's not funny Brian he thinks every phone conversation is his to moderate......(pause, and slightly softer of a voice..) well do I have news for him!"
"So someone plowed your driveway?" I asked....chomping on a carrot stick, "That was nice of them," I continued.
"Yea I don't know who in the world it was?" she said sounding puzzled.
I hear in my grandpa in the back-ground, "It was one of my friends," he said.
"Oh Jack, you don't have any friends.....now stop it!" she said in a loud commanding voice.
I start laughing.
"Well honestly, do you know of any friends your grandpa has, I mean really? List one and even the one hes got would never plow our driveway."
I hear nothing on the end of the telephone.....nothing more out of him..........nothing more out of her......So I do what everyone should................
I change the subject. HAHA.
Happy 1st snow!!

"Do You Need Help With This?"

I was shopping at Walmart for Christmas decorations on Wednesday when I met the nicest lady, she was trying to load dura logs into her cart when I stepped in...

"Ms," I said, "Do you need help loading those into your cart?" I asked.

"Oh you know, I'm not sure I want these. My husband might be buying them over at Sam's," she said as she pushed the box back into the stack. "But that was so nice of you to ask, what a gentleman," she said with a slight grin.

We stepped a few yards apart and I still had a grin on my face, "People are so nice here, I've only been here three days and I'm so impressed," I said this over about four people standing between us.

"What are you doing here?"

"Oh, I'm the new TV guy at 12," as I said that about five people turned their heads.

"I need you!" the lady I had just met at the logs shouted. She pushed her cart quickly over to me. "I need your help so bad my mother-in-law was scammed.

The lady, Marge, went into this horrific story of how her mother-in-law was scammed out of $4,500.00.

A young man called her mother-in-law and said, "Grandma, is that you?"

the lady responds with "Mark, Mark is that you?"

"Yea, grandma it's me. Listen I was in a car accident with my friends in Ontario. My parents cant find out they will kill me. Grandma the car is damaged really bad and I'm injured. I need $4,500.00."

Marge went on to say that she really thought it was her grandson on the phone and despite that fact she is on a fixed income and doesn't have that kind of money she had a friend drive her to the same Walmart that we met in and wired this criminal $4,500.00!

That was three weeks ago and she till this day doesn't understand--she still thinks it was her grandson on the phone. Injured and scared.

A week later Marge's mother got a similar call in distress. This is the first story I intend to cover when I start my job next week at KODE. I share it with you in hopes that something like this doesn't happen to your family during the holidays. Scammers are smart and they are evil, typically targeting older people and in a way like this urgent, frightened, injured in a way to go for the emotional kill. It's so sad!

Just a reminder to be extra cautious this time of year!

No One is Left Out

Haha, I thought this was funny!

Snow in Joplin...Yikes

They said it doesn't snow here much! I'm not convinced. LoL.

Adjusting to Joplin

So where did we leave off in Topeka? Oh yea, I was moving to Joplin. Haha.
Well I have to say I miss my friends and c0-workers a whole lot!
I moved on Tuesday. It was sure a sight. I was pulling my car behind a U-Haul. I have never driven anything so large in my life!
In a matter of just a few days I have un-packed, moved everything around, joined a church, ordered new furniture, made a cake and cookies....all while trying to stay sane. I am not use to so much time off!!
I've talked to Rae Chelle just about everyday. I feel guilty that I left before Thanksgiving, I signed up to work the holiday.
I'm happy to be able to blog again. This is really exciting!
By the way ROCK CHALK. The Jayhawks blew away Mizzou this weekend. Shhh. I'm suppose to be a new Tiger fan....Roar....!
HaHa!
I miss everyone and am looking forward to hearing from you!

Grandma, "Am I Still Talked About?"

I was on the phone with my grandma today and she was worried that since the blogs had ended at WIBW that she was no longer talked about in my social network of friends. Oh grandma....Topeka was only the beginning.

"Hunni am I still talked about?"

"Yea grandma I am blogging again!"

"You are?" she asked.

"Yup, I'm not sure I can get my new job to embrace the blogging idea so I started a new blog on a site for just blogging."

"Neat!" she said with an excitement to her voice.

So this one is to you grandma! Thank you for all of you who read my blogs on a regular basis. I hope you will become my friend on here and continue to follow my antics!

;0)
